The Porsche works team’s weapon of choice for the 1968 season, and favoured by many drivers until the 917 was properly sorted, the 908 “became one of the most successful and versatile racing cars Porsche ever made” wrote marque historian and author Karl Ludvigsen in his definitive Porsche history, Excellence was Expected.
This short tail coupe, the configuration employed for the factory’s cars in their inaugural 1968 season, was driven by veteran Hans Herrmann paired with Kurt Ahrens at the 1968 Austrian Grand Prix at Zeltweg, a World Championship event, where it came home 2nd behind the sister 908 of Joe Siffert. It led a short racing career, later spending years on museum display before passing, via US Porsche expert Dale Miller, to Reid Vann and finally, in the early 2000s, to the current European owner. Restoration was carried out at the Porsche factory in 1994 and further work, including a complete rebuild of the original 3 litre, 8 cylinder engine, has been entrusted to Porsche Milano (who, overseen by an ex-Autodelta team manager, run a successful customer racing operation). Chassis ‘018’ is therefore offered with fresh engine (only testing hours run), FIA papers (fiche no. 2295, issued 24.4.2003), Porsche factory documentation (including period race notes) and even a current British V5 road registration document, enabling not only road use (!) but making it easy to transport the car to international events without the need for customs carnets, a useful and practical consideration.
