Any Ferrari Grand Prix car is special, but winners of World Championship Grands Prix are in a class of their own- and this car won two. Driven by charismatic and well-loved Austrian Gerhard Berger to victory in the 1987 Japanese GP at Suzuka and then the season finale at Adelaide, it took on and beat some of the greatest drivers and cars in F1 history- including Ayrton Senna in a Lotus and Alain Prost in a McLaren. Berger’s back-to-back victories were no flukes: he qualified on pole for both races and set fastest lap in Adelaide. This Ferrari mixed it with the very best and proved its worth.

At season’s end Il Commendatore, the ageing Enzo Ferrari, gifted the car to Berger as a token of his gratitude. He later sold it to a scion of the Swarowski crystal family, and it was acquired by the present owner, an Italian physician and lifelong Ferrari supporter, in 2007. Maintenance and on-track use has been entrusted to the nearby Ferrari factory under the auspices of their F1 Clienti programme, and a complement of spares has been built up to ensure ease of future use. The new owner will take delivery of a spare engine block, heads, starting equipment, jacks, spare wheels with ‘wet’ tyres, modern data acquisition and a vast quantity of documentation, much of it acquired thanks to contacts within the Ferrari factory. Everything necessary to run the car is present.

In the current ownership eight F1 Clienti events have been entered but the owners increasing overseas workload has prompted the reluctant decision to part with this unique piece of Ferrari Formula One history. It is ‘on the button’, surprisingly easy to drive (and spacious, due to Berger’s height), not to mention one of the most evocative, charismatic and exciting motor cars one could wish to own. If like most young tifosi you’ve ever imagined yourself at the wheel of a Formula One Ferrari, you may be surprised that the dream is- today at least- more accessible than you dared hope…
